Refactoring common/contacts.py
by Yann Leboulanger 26 Nov '08

Hey, as my train got stuck in the first real winter night here, I thought it was the right time to make my mind about what could be improved in Gajim's handling of accounts and contacts. You can see this as a first outbreak that I would like to share with you as soon as possible. Comments and ideas are welcome. :-) See "1. accounts.png" I'd like to centralize information in account classes instead of spreading it over several dictionaries (most of them in common/gajim.py). Furthermore I'd really like to pull out functionality from roster_window. At the moment new roster_data (on connect, received by xmpp) will be directed to roster_window that is responsible for creating contact instances and placing those in common/contacts.py. Last but not least XMPPEntity is meant to simplify a lot of coding. We don't need to pass plain jids around any longer. We will always know the account of a jid and what type it is (e.g "groupchat contact" or "a normal jid with resource") To understand more about XMPPEntity, just read on. See "2. contacts.py" The class diagram is looking more complicated than it really is. You can understand ContactRosterInterface and ContactChatInterface as everything that is required to add a "Contact" (as currently defined in common/Contacts.py) to roster_window or to start a chat with a contact. The rest was designed to simplify coding that has to run on several "Contacts" (e.g assigning a nick to a contact that is online with 5 resources or to move a metacontact to a new group). I see working on this as a good starting point for several reasons. On the one hand we can keep 95% of our code in place as it will be just backward compatible. The rest can be easily ported to the new API. One by one we can migrate and simplify components by letting them use the newly defined interfaces. On the other hand I see this as a good basis for writing regression tests. That way, contacts and accounts should be much easier to test and even to mock. What do you think? Best Regards, steve-e

Autopackage
by Yann Leboulanger 24 Nov '08

Hey, could someone be so kind and satisfy my curiosity about the autopackage folder in the sources of gajim? :-) It doesn't seem to be used nor maintained. Is it still known to be working and used somewhere or by someone? Best Regards, steve-e

Unable to login to Gajim's Trac
by Marcin Zajączkowski 17 Nov '08

Hi, I am unable to login to Gajim's Trac [1]. There is even no login page available. [2] returns "No handler matched request to /login". Did you make any changes with Trac recently? [1] - http://trac.gajim.org/ [2] - http://trac.gajim.org/login Regards Marcin

ETA of 0.12
by Debarshi Ray 17 Nov '08

17 Nov '08

I am just curious to know when can we expect to have the stable release of 0.12? I decided not to update the Fedora package to 0.12 alpha since it looks like there will not be a stable release before Fedora 10. If we are close to a stable release, I would like to update the package and push it to the testing repositories for some testing. Happy hacking, Debarshi

I'd be happy to connect you to developers on those other projects for interop testing etc. There's a lot of momentum right now on the Jingle front. :) Peter - -- Peter Saint-Andre https://stpeter.im/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.8 (Darwin) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iEYEARECAAYFAkkcxV8ACgkQNL8k5A2w/vy5OQCguCAj9XVNd4AXmZB3LNYtdbI/ n1AAn2ql22P46ns/ApQyo2Qov3Q/e7KF =/BUt -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

FYI. What do you guys think? Is anyone still working on the Jingle code? I'd be happy to put you in touch with developers working on other clients. /psa -------- Original Message -------- Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2008 15:43:00 -0700 From: Peter Saint-Andre <stpeter(a)stpeter.im> To: Discussion about the XMPP Jingle extensions for multimedia sessions <jingle(a)xmpp.org> Subject: Re: [Jingle] libjingle in Python Michael Flaig wrote: > Gajim (gajim.org) is written in python and has a jingle branch that was > developed during google summer of code in it's SVN Repository. Right now a lot of developers are working on Jingle support in Pidgin, Kopete, Empathy, Psi, Yate, SIP Communicator, Pandion, and other clients, so it would be great to see Gajim re-join the list. When that Gajim code was written the XEPs were still changing quite a bit, but I think they're solid now (as witness all the recent activity). Perhaps I'll poke the Gajim devs about this. :) Peter -- Peter Saint-Andre https://stpeter.im/
