[Gajim-devel] Can't connect to server; how to debug?

Hallöchen!

My employer runs a Jubber server that I cannot cnnect to with Gajim.
It works seemlessly with Pidgin, though.  I have only this howto in
German that explains the installation with Pidgin:

Gajim doesn't output any error message (even not on the console); it
just hangs, i.e. tries to connect indefinitely.  How do I proceed?

I tested with the Gajim shipped with Ubuntu 14.04 as well as weil
the currect 0.16 tarball.
